Best time to visit Japan

Late March and early April is cherry-blossom season, with days of 14° to 19° in Tokyo; hotels are booked months ahead.

Late October to November brings red autumn colours to Kyoto, with pleasant weather.

July and August are hot and humid (around 31°), June is the rainy season, and September and October are Tokyo's wettest months.

Before you travel

  • The Shinkansen bullet train links Tokyo and Kyoto in about 2 h 15 min, so combine both cities in one trip.
  • A Suica or Pasmo card covers trains, the metro and shops.
  • Halal food is available in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, and some major stations have prayer rooms.
  • Start your eVISA at least three weeks before travel.
